The feminist movement has been trying to break the shackles of inequality for over a century. The progress has been slow but steady till now. Although, in recent times, feminism has been getting some backlash worldwide for becoming regressive and limiting toward men. Many people argue that we no longer need feminism. However, looking at statistics and deeper into society, you can see that feminism is essential as it demands equality for all, regardless of a person's gender or sexual identity.
Here are several facets that show women are still not treated equal to men in our society.
The number of women in the workforce has become nearly equal in most states in the USA, yet the pay gap remains. It means that women are paid less for the same job than men because of their gender. Studies show that women get only 77 percent of what their male counterparts earn in full-time and part-time employment in the US. Hence, there is still a long way to go to achieve equality.
It is believed that having more women in higher leadership roles and management positions can reduce problems like the general pay gap and sexual harassment in companies. Then, why do people avoid hiring more women for such jobs? The reason is the implicit bias people have against women, due to which they overlook women's resumes over men's for leadership positions. The bias will need to be individually tackled to increase the number of women in leadership positions.
The number of women being less in leadership positions is not just the case in corporations. Even in the government, women are underrepresented. In a country like the USA, 51 percent of the population is women, and only 27 percent of the congress is women. It shows that there is a lot of gap in the leadership in the political strata as well.
Getting funds for a startup from investors is already one of the most difficult challenges entrepreneurs face. Top that up with investors being biased against women; they are even less likely to revive funds. According to a study by All Raise, an NGO shows that only 11 percent of venture capitalists are women. In other funding sources, the numbers are even lower.
Even with years of education and jobs like male family members, females still do most household duties, including grocery shopping and cooking. It creates a poor work-life balance as women have to take more temporary leaves to manage everything themselves.
