Important Issues Women Still Face at Work
In a corporate organization, you may find an equal number of male and female employees. However, reaching equality in numbers doesn't mean that women are treated as equals in the workplace. Women still face discrimination and gender bias in the workplace regardless of their position or skills.
Here are some of the most prominent issues that women face in the workplace.
Pregnancy discrimination
Being able to bring new life is one the biggest things women can do. Yet it leaves them at a great disadvantage in the workplace. Pregnancy leaves and other medical conditions that come with pregnancy lead to various types of discrimination against expecting women. Their pay is reduced, they face stereotypes, and they even lose growth opportunities.
Sexual harassment
Workplace harassment has been there for a long time, yet it has surfaced more recently, with some women finding the courage to speak up through the Metoo Movement. With that movement, many cases of sexual harassment were revealed in all kinds of industries. Workplace harassment is still a big concern in many organizations. One of the reasons for that is if victims come forward, they fear ruining their careers and becoming an outcast in their company, so many still fear speaking up.
Breaking the glass ceiling
It is seen that women have more trouble than their male counterparts in reaching positions of power in the organization, even if they have equal amounts of experience and skills. They are overlooked due to their gender during promotions. It is also the case when searching for a job role due to unconscious bias.
Racial discrimination
Unfortunately, black women in the US experience most racism in the workplace as compared to any other place in the US. Studies show that black women face more microaggression at the workplace due to their race. The gender pay gap is even for black and Hispanic women compared to white women in the country.
The grooming gap
In the workplace, there is societal pressure that women must look well-groomed and dress according to certain standards. Such restrictions put time and financial contraction on women, which are especially problematic when there is a recession or financial problem in the family. Men don’t have to invest that much in
their looks when going to work.
Work-life imbalance
Women have more responsibilities regarding kids and household chores, even if they have a job or contribute to the finances. It creates additional pressure on women, which causes work-life imbalance. They also don’t get flexible hours to manage their work and household.
